Ashington was owned by Stephenson Clarke Shipping Ltd, of Newcastle and was fitted with a Walker Wingsail in Southampton as an experimental form of reducing fuel costs. It was operated for about 3 years before being removed. The original idea was to have a further Wingsail on the forecastle, but the idea was dropped. She was a 6000 mts bulk carrier.
