Marine accident round-up : 6th February 2020
Bulk carrier Life Passion (IMO 9737888) has been kept at an anchorage 31km off Oostende ever since her arrival from Novorossiysk on January 20th. A safety zone of one nautical mile around the ship has been established by the MRCC. A patrol boat from the DAB Fleet has been on site to keep other ships in a safe distance and to be able to evacuate the crew if needed. The ship was being loaded with iron ore but there was a fear of an explosion due to ore self-heating and hydrogen emission. An emergency team went on board and started to eliminate the explosion threat by filling the cargo holds with inert gas. However, the ship still needed to be thoroughly checked. The bulk carrier, with a crew of 16 on board had been bound for Ghent. When it is certain that there is no danger and that hydrogen levels have decreased significantly, the vessel will be permitted to enter port. 2018-built, Marshall Islands-flagged, 24,198 gt Life Passion is owned by Nordic Perth Ltd care of manager Olive Shipmanagement Inc of Athens, Greece. It is entered with West of England (Claims Team Greece) on behalf of Elena Navigation SA.
