From NZ Maritime Index: Built 1907. The tug LYTTELTON was formerly named CANTERBURY and was renamed in 1911 to avoid confusion with the harbour's dredge CANTERBURY. 1939 the tug was adapted for war work, armed with cannon and machine gun. She was equipped to drop depth charges and was used as a boarding vessel and to drop mines. Returned to peacetime duties after the War. 1970 there was talk of scrapping her but instead the Harbour Board leased her to a newly-incorporated preservation society for 10 cents a year.
