Very interesting observations, Manfred. If the P&J photo is indeed CAPE BORDA, I'd say the absence of the middle cargo gate is fatal. I can imagine a company adding one, but there's no reason they'd spend the money to take one away. But as you point out, the position of the gangway represents the steam version and not the motor units. As for the kingposts aft of #3, almost none of the CI-A's were originally fitted with them, but I believe late photos of all the Delta Line C1-A's show them, as if they're something Delta added. That sounds unusual, particular since many duplicate the style of the other masts, but the photos speak for themselves.

I'm convinced this is a steam C1-A, so if your photo of CAPE BORDA is the correct vessel, I can only assume this mystery photo shows a chartered vessel, not one of the DEL's.

I can see it is a C1A-boat from 2.ww. Only a clue for more investigation special to the marking of the funnel

3 letter names:
DEL RIO (ex CAPE HATTERAS):

Not identical.

DEL ORO (ex CAPE TEXAS):

Not identical.

DEL SOL (ex CAPE JUBY)
Not identical.

Delta Line had 5 of the CI-A (M) class diesel freighters, DEL CAMPO, DEL VIENTO, DEL RIO, DEL SOL, and DEL ORO (Later renamed DEL MONTE.) These were all built by the Pennsylvania Shipyard. They also had 1 similar steam freighter of the C1-A (S) type. She was named DEL MONTE (ex CAPE BORDA), Pusey & Jones yard number 1100. She went for scrap in 1971, and would have had the mock-IMO number 508777x.

I believe this photo is this earler DEL MONTE for this reason: On the motor ships, the exhaust was routed through the back of the funnel structure. On the steam versions, it was routed through the front. In this photo, the modified extension to the funnel is clearly on the forward end of the stack. So unless this is a chartered vessel, she is the one steam C1-A in the Delta fleet, the original DEL MONTE.

Hi George,
I get your point but how likely is it that she had been rebuilt with an addition pair of kingposts and derricks at the bridge front? And what happened to the second cargo gate at the side of the hull, it is not visible in Edson's photo.
On the other hand CAPE BORDA was the only one owned by Delta Line which was built by Pusey & Jones, (note the gangway position way aft) compared to the Penn.-builts.
Please compare with this photo and note the steam:
