Description:

ARIADNE, built 1930 by Nylands Verksted at Oslo for Bergen Line / Det Bergenske Dampskisselskab te Bergen, both Norway. 2028 grt, 1138 nrt, 271.3 x 38.2 feet, 3-cyl steam turbine built by the yard. In service Trondheim – Bergen – Rotterdam, in 1939 / 1940 sailing in Hurtigruten. Converted to a hospital ship at the beginning of the war and was marked as such according to international rules. On 9th June 1940 bombed and attacked by German aircraft off Lofoten and sunk outside Tromso, while heading for Thorshavn with 38 crew and 16 passengers. A bomb hit forward of the bridge which destroyed the steering mechanism as well as setting her on fire. Another 3 bombs hit, damaging 2 of the lifeboats. Nine dead, the survivors were picked up by HMS Arrow. According to the captain's report, the attack lasted for about 45 minutes. Photo from Nasjonalbiblioteket, license: public domain.
