VENUS built 1931 by Elsinore Shipbuilding & Engineering Co at Helsingor for Det Bergenske Dampskipsselskab. 5406 grt, 2867 nrt, 1760 dwt, 412.0 x 54.2 x 26.7 feet, 277 passengers, 60 crew, two 10-cyl B&W diesels, 9000 bhp, 19.5 knots. At delivery the fastest motor ship in the world. Twice weekly service Bergen – Newcastle. September 1939 laid-up at Bergen because of WW2. March 1941 seized by Germany for submarine depot service in the Baltic. 15th April 1945 sunk at Hamburg by allied bombers, later salvaged, rebuilt and modernized at the building yard at Helsingor, 6269 grt. In March 1948 returned to Newcastle service. Later also cruises. 23th March 1955 stranded near Plymouth during gale, refloated. Spring 1965 repainted white with yellow funnels, twice weekly Newcastle – Stavanger service. Summer 1966 replaced by car ferry JUPITER, now weekly Bergen – Rotterdam.
