Believe photo taken at Napier, NZ between 9-11.12.74. This was the third of her 5 visits to the port when Hapag operated her and sister Bayersntein regularly on the NZ trade from 1973 to 1976. Another sister Friesestein also called, then superceded in 1976 when containerships incl. Melbourne Express and Sydney Express of same company upgraded the trade.

When they were launched, these East Asia fast freighters were still considered highly modern. Only a few years later, they were confronted with the container ships of the 3rd generation. Suddenly obsolete, Hapag-Lloyd sold all its ships up to 1984. For four of the seven ships an early end came. Only the three ships converted into semi-containerships reached an age of 27 years. They fell victim to the container revolution.
