I agree, it's like a (most refreshing) blast from the past! I can't recall seeing another such ship during my time here in Adelaide.

There was another similarly-rigged ship, the GOUTA MARU, here a few days ago, but I missed seeing her when her departure was brought forward from 10am to the wee small hours of the same morning. GOUTA MARU is now in the Port Lincoln anchorage, and KENTA MARU is due to depart Adelaide for Port Lincoln today.

I think (and this is pure speculation, I have no evidence for it) that they might be used to transfer the catch at sea from factory trawlers operating in the Southern Ocean. Derricks would be the best way by far of transferring cargo ship-to-ship at sea.
