Hey Treefrog, this is Romie. I was the Boatswain during the SAA salvage in Mauritius with the ROV Gemini. Capt. Donnan was the skipper, Keith Summers was Chief Officer. John Allan was Chief Engineer. i'm just wondering who you are. I hope you'll see my comment.

I did three trips on that wreck. First one was the salvage job on the SAA Flight 295, 'Helderberg' which crashed off Mauritius in 1987. We found the wreckage site in late 1988 and recovered the voice recorder 'black box' in January 1989. I remember hearing that Roy Orbison had died during that job.
I also did a dry-dock in Singapore later that year and then went with the ship down to Australia to install a riser in the South Timor Sea (I think). I went back to Singapore with the ship where it was sold to a Norwegian company for a very large sum. It should have gone straight to the breakers. To give the old tub its due, it might have been a floating junk yard but it always got the job done.
