I am very positively surprised that a fifty-six-year-old ship built in Japan is still operational. I worked on bulk carriers and refrigerated carriers built in Japanese shipyards much later. None of them served shipowners for more than 25 years. The average quality of ships built in those shipyards at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s was quite poor.

Why is the port of registry in a country that dot not have a port?

There are several such countries in Europe. Hungary - ships registered in Budapest, Czech Republic - in Prague, Slovakia - in Bratislava, Switzerland - in Bern, Austria - in Vienna, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg - in Luxemburg ...
I had the pleasure of working under the flags of: Austria, Slovakia and Luxemburg.

Csaba, the Declaration recognising the Right to a Flag of States having no Sea-coast (French: Déclaration portant reconnaissance du droit au pavillon des États dépourvus de littoral) is a 1921 multilateral treaty which legally recognised that a land-locked state could be a maritime flag state; that is, that a land-locked state could register ships and sail them on the sea under its own flag. Hence ships registered in Switzerland for example.

Wow, still alive! She was already reported "dead" years ago. Interestingly she should now be flagged to Cameroon (homeport Kribi) but still the port of registry Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia) can be clearly seen...
