One of the old Gearing-class destroyers, originally built in 1945, as she appeared after being upgraded as an anti-submarine escort. In 1973 she was transferred to the Spanish Armada, which renamed her Méndez Núñez. She was finally decommissioned and scrapped in 1992. The small flight deck aft, which was part of the upgrade, was not intended for a manned helicopter, but for a small anti-submarine drone helicopter known as a "DASH" (Drone Anti-Submarine Helicopter). A hangar for the "DASH" was also installed between the flight deck and the second funnel. However, although it seemed like a good idea at the time, in practice the "DASH" never worked very well so that few ever became operational and most of these destroyers never received them at all.
