A number of their ships carried only 'anti-knock' - tetra-ethyl-lead.
Was on the opposite side of the Shell wharf in Geelong to one in the 80's. Everyone vanished, except two crew in white 'top to toe' who connected a white 4 inch line and they also vanished. repeated the process a few hours later before she sailed.
I think they used to scuttle rather scrap these ships.
Side note - standing on the poop watching an R-P come alongside - engineer standing next to me looks at flag - looks at funnel---'hmm - rape and pillage'..

Thought she looked like a bulk carrier, was converted in 1964 into chemical tanker.
