According to the Greek poet Hesiod ? or Herodotus , the goddess of love Venus was created from sea foam when Cronus cut off his father's( Uranus) genitals and threw them into the ocean to punish him for his cruelty. Venus emerged from the waves and headed towards the shore of one of the Greek islands.
The tug Venus on this photograph appears to be emerging from the foam and beautifully refers to this (otherwise cruel) story about the birth of Venus.
