Many thanks Martin, that's most interesting. I'm relieved to learn that you were soon released. A similar incident occurred on one of my three mid-1990s visits to the Suez Canal, when I stayed at the Red Sea Hotel in Port Tewfik. We were alarmed when a truckoad of soldiers turned up to question us, but the officer in charge could not have been more pleasant and we were not arrested. In case of interest, a section of my new book "From Cuba to Ukraine", depicts photographs of former Soviet ships passing Port Tewfik. There is also a section on Soviet ships in the Bosphorus.
