Why do lots of these inland ships have car or two on them? Do people actually live on them as a permanent place so they have car on a ship like we have them in a garage?

Yes, people live on the inland container-, cargo-vessels and tankers. Depending on the size of the vessel one skipper and one deckhand up to two skippers / mates and two or three deckhands. Skippers / mates mostly on a two week schedule, deckhands (many from Poland or other non Dutch) two or more months: they drive home in their own cars. Deckhands from Philippines or Indonesia on a eight month contract, they fly home.
