Description:

Circa 1966-1968, unknown location.

** Now identified as 'Transcaribbean' IMO 5367336.**
Photo has now been flipped to the correct orientation at the entrance to San Juan.

On May 1st, 1963, the American cargo ship TRANSCARIBBEAN (ex-Victory ship AUGUSTANA VICTORY), built in 1945, on a voyage from New York to Bermuda with general cargo, was wrecked on Las Cabritas rocks near Isla de Cabras, outside San Juan, Puerto Rico. It was impossible to refloat the ship, which was firmly struck between rocks and it was considered a TCL.
The ship was abandoned and remained there, as it wasn't considered a danger to navigation.

Vessel details:
Keel laid on 05/04/1945, launched on 16/05/1945, and delivered on 09/06/1945,
(Ship was built from start to finish in 65 days, consisting of 41 days on the slipway, and 24 days fitting out, afloat, by Kaiser Permanente No. 2 Shipyard, Richmond, California, USA (755)
7,607 g.t. & 10,750 dwt., as:
'Augustana Victory' to 1948,
'American Lawyer' to 1956, &
'Transcaribbean' until 01/05/1952 when, during a voyage from New York to Bermuda with general cargo, ran aground &
was wrecked on Las Cabritas rocks, near Isla des Cabras, San Juan, Puerto Rico. The wreck was not removed.

Original text:

The photographer was known to have visited central and south American east coasts. Palm trees can be seen on the land.

I cannot tell if the image needs to be flipped.
There is another photo, taken a few minutes later, further to the right of this scene, which indicates that the photographer's ship was inbound into, perhaps, an inlet or port.

The wrecked ship, appearing to be a five hatch Victory ship, has clearly run aground and broken in two.

Scanned from a poor quality slide in the collection of the late Niels Anker Larsen, former Danish Merchant Navy Radio Officer.

Thanks for that info Yvon, I will have to get my BIG book of Liberty Ships out.... but I will have to go through each ship, one at a time :-( That should take me about a month! haha.

Rick, I wonder she is more a 'Victory type' than a Liberty Ship. Th list will be shorter ;-)

Yvon, I think I have got the right ship, I looked at each Victory ship!
The time of the wreck would be very appropriate. The wreck looks as though it has been in situ for a few years. She was wrecked in 1963 and the photographer was in that region about 1966/1968.
TRANSCARIBBEAN IMO 5367336, built as AUGUSTANA VICTORY.

Without your suggestion, identifying her would have been far more difficult. Much appreciated, Rick
