Description:

CCGS Relay was a Search and Rescue cutter built for the Canadian Coast Guard in the early 1960. She had few sisterships (RALLY, READY, RACER, RAPID and RACER on the West Coast. The RELAY was based in Québec city and was used for sounding the St Lawrence rive in the early 1970 altough she was not designed for this purpose. In 1977, the Canadian governement put her back as a SAR vessel based this time in Tadoussac with a large area to cover between Ile aux Coudres and Sept Iles. She had two crews being replaced each two weeks in Rivière du Loup. She was replaced in 1983 by the CG 124 (CCGS ISLE ROUGE) and by the CCGS VILLE MARIE. She was sold a couple times to be used as a floating restaurant but was acquired around 1986 or 87 by Capt Luc Harvey, owner of the tour boat JACQUES CARTIER in order to use two engines on the JACQUES CARTIER (RELAY had a four engines config). I tough that she was scrapped then but it was a real surprise for me to see her near L'Islet in March 2007. Her galvanised hull prevent her from rapid destruction. She was sold again in 2012 ans is expected to be submerged in 2014 as an artificial reef on Lake St Francois.
