Mr. Montana,

Sorry this reply took so long, I never seem to get notifications when people leave comments on this website. I will attempt to send you a direct and/or private message with this same information, so that you know as soon as possible what I have to share.

I do not myself possess any plans for the Santa Lucia class, all I have are the slides which were scanned to make the photos I have posted on this site. I have searched everywhere I can online & can't find any downloadable plans.

But I am fairly certain I know where you can get the General Arrangement plans you're looking for.

The Independence Seaport Museum, J. Welles Henderson Archives and Library seems to have them.

There is a "finding aid" that describes the items they have.
This is the link to the website for that "finding aid" :
http://hdl.library.upenn.edu/1017/d/pacscl/ISM_8476

This is a link to a downloadable PDF version of that finding aid:
http://dla.library.upenn.edu/dla/pacscl/ead.pdf?id=PACSCL_ISM_8476

The way the "finding aid" describes what is available is vague & confusing:

Under "Series III. Ships plans and technical drawings, 1916-1980." We have:

1. "[Item?] 633-700A-A9: General arrangement of West Coast South America freighters
for Grace Line Inc., 1963 September 10. [Located in] Box 8 Folder 1"

If you're interested, they also have:

2. "[Item?] 633-700A-B: Booklet of general plans of West Coast South America
freighters for Grace Line Inc., 1965 December 2. [Also located in] Box 8 Folder 1"

They don't list a MARAD Design code or give a name, but the C4-S1-49a ships were designed my George Sharp & built by Bethlehem Steel at Sparrows Point, so I'm guessing Sun Shipbuilding wouldn't have those, so the plans above must be for the Santa Lucia C4-S-65a class.

The link to contact information for the Independence Seaport Museum, J. Welles Henderson Archives and Library is:

As the finding a points out, the Hagley Museum and archives also has some information and some pretty extensive records about Sun shipbuilding and drydock Company, and even the ships they built there. I believe they have at least some photographs of the Santa Lucia class, and they might also have some plans. Here's the link to the website describing their collections:

https://www.hagley.org/research/collections/manuscripts-and-archives-collection

And the contact info:

"For information about collections in our Manuscripts and Archives Department, please contact us at 302-658-2400 ext 330 or send us an email at

Dear Sir:

I'm planning to build of the Grace Line Freighters of the Santa Lucia Class (Design C-4-S-65a) Hull #633, which were in the NDFR fleet MARAD Retention, James River Reserve Fleet. She entered on 08/02/1985.

She was built in April 1966 by Sun SB & DD Co., I would appreciate very much if you could assist me in obtaining a copy of the General Arrangement plan to build the scale model of this vessel. I used to work for Grace Line for many years and I have pictures of the ship, but to build a scale replica of her the ship plan is essential.

Thank you in advance for your kind attention into this matter.

Sincerely,

Adolf D. Montana
