Description:
Ostend 2004.
The fishing logger was launched at a shipyard in Weert in 1916. Its 12 man crew fished for herring at Dogger Bank and Viking Bank. The also made fishing trips to the Atlantic Ocean north of Scotland. The rigging was designed in such a way that the vessel was able to use a herring net, a drift net of about 2 km which floated in the sea.
At the end of the 1940 ’s this type of fishing was no longer profitable and the vessel was sold to a German owner, who used it as a freighter under the name of Helmut. She transported freight from Hamburg to Sweden and St.Petersburg.
The current owners saw the rusty ship ’s rump anchored in a Swedish harbour. After an eventful search they finally tracked down the owner and freed the vessel from its ignominious fate. In 1997, the ship was put into service as the Topsail Logger Mare Frisium.
