Astilleros M. Cíes, located in Vigo(Spain), has just delivered the Monte Meixueiro (Newbuilding no. 120), a 62-m cod-fishing freezer trawler. This vessel, ordered by the company Valiela, also located in Vigo, features a modern on-board fish factory.

In march 2005, the company owner sent his new ship to Norwegian fishing grounds(CIEM I & IIB -Svalbard-), where her prime mission will be to catch cod. M. Cíes plans to deliver a second trawler, 40 m in length, to the same owner in October of this year.

The Monte Meixueiro, designed by Technical Office F. Carceller, features innovations that distinguish her from conventional Spanish fishing vessels. They centre fundamentally on making net handling easier and faster, and improving fish processing systems in order to ensure maximum quality. Those systems include three fish preparation and filleting lines in the on-board processing plant, making it possible to work with different fish sizes. The hold is especially designed to store the processed catch in two separate compartments, one for salted and one for frozen fish. A flow-ice system has been installed to ensure top-quality freezing, for a freezing capacity of 45 tonnes per day.

Other advances have been put into practice on the deck. Instead of the traditional wooden deck top, special steel strips have been arranged. The design requirements included a broad deck. Its 12-m beam allows for handling and storing simultaneously two complete trawl rigs. This greatly reduces the interval between net launches. Another highly practical feature is the work deck that extends from stem to stern.
