Hi Malcolm, the ship might have been awful in quality, but it is looking great an your photos. Such sips still look like ships and not like floating boxes.

Hello Gerolf and many thanks for your kind comments

The timber imports from Brazil, which brought so many nice ships to Heysham and the River Mersey in the 1990's, were fully containerised by 2002

I shall try to post some more photos of those ships when time permits

It has been interesting to see your recent postings and hope to see more from you also!

best regards
Malcolm Cranfield

Excellent shot , but an awful ship. If I remember rightly she was an "TD15" Class with hinged tweendecks. Apart from having light scantlings she had a very dodgy engine and was always having "down time" for repairs. Apparently this type of engine , which escapes me, was not a very good design. Also, the hinged tweens on this type of ship often collapsed :-o Anyway, apart from all that it would appear she was on an Lamport & Holt time-charter if she was calling Heysham as they switched their Brazil/Liverpool service to Heysham due to problems in Liverpool.

Hello Stumps - many thanks for your interesting comments - WIND's frequent changes of ownership probably reflect the deficiencies that you mention!

Although you are correct in saying that Vestey (Booth/L+H) moved to Heysham, she was not on time charter to them.

A timber trader/importer, I think named Dankrag, started to use Heysham in 1988 for the discharge, storage and delivery of parcels of timber from Brazil. This brought a number of interesting ships to Heysham for around 10 years including VALI.P of which a photograph has also been submitted to this website.

Inevitably, the trade is now containerised.

best regards
Malcolm Cranfield
