Description:

Elder Dempster's OBUASI was destined to survive for only a little over one year after this photograph was taken from the North Pier at Avonmouth on 18th July 1971.

Built in 1952 by Harland & Wolff at Belfast, she was sold in 1972 to Anglo-Pacific S.A., a subsidiary of Anglo-Eastern Shipping Co of Hong Kong, placed under the Somalia flag and renamed AMOY.

She ran aground on 9th August 1972 off Burma and became a total loss.

Hi Martin D., it is only today that I have seen your fascinating comment which is very much appreciated. The photo is expected to be used in the forthcoming issue of Dog Watch, the house magazine of the Association of Old Worcesters which circulates worldwide to former Worcester cadets. Best regards. Malcolm Cranfield.

I have been looking for this picture for 41 years! I was at the wheel on Obuasi in July 1971 when it was approaching Avonmouth and I saw a photographer on the quayside taking what turned out to be this picture. I wasn't able to contact him then and it has taken 41 years for me to do so! Many thanks for putting it on the web.
