Description:

05/11/2006, return leg of vessel's Maiden Voyage - first call at the Port of Felixstowe, England.

Propeller shaft turning gear, an electric motor turns the engine one revolution every 8 minutes.
The turning gear is only engaged when the main engine is shut down, to prevent the weight of the shaft distorting the thrust bearings.
Turning gear is engaged during warm through of the engine prior to sailing. One of the most important functions is to ensure a good coating of cylinder lubrication. oil over the piston and cylinder walls, to prevent excess wear during first movements (primarily due to contaminants in the fuel and low overall temperature).
