GORCH FOCK (II) is the second sail training vessel of the German navies bearing that name. The smaller GORCH FOCK (I) was built in 1933, became the Soviet TOVARISHCH after the war. After some years sailing under the Ukrainian flag she is now back in Germany, again named GORCH FOCK. So we now have two GORCH FOCKs in Germany. GORCH FOCK (I) also might sail again in a few years.

Werner

There is some good information on this all Ship @
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorch_Fock_(1958)
The article also mentions this - "She is sometimes referred to (unofficially) as the Gorch Fock II to distinguish her from her older sister ship."
By the way I have moved the vessel to the Tall Ships sub category.

GORCH FOCK (II) is not a sistership of GORCH FOCK (I). Although of a similar design GORCH FOCK (II), HORST WESSEL / EAGLE and ALBERT LEO SCHLAGETER / SAGRES (III) (yes she indeed is the 3rd SAGRES) are about 7 meters longer than GORCH FOCK (I).
The picture shown with GORCH FOCK (I) is of GORCH FOCK (II). GORCH FOCK (II)'s figurehead, the Albatros has smaller wings than the "birds" of her sisters. G.F. (II) also misses the scrollwork which GF (I) has above her much smaller "bird". The first three portholes of G.F. (II) and her sisters on the port side below the main deck are unevenly spaced while the ones of G.F. (I) are evenly spaced. And finally G.F. (II) and A.L.S. had / have no antenna yards on their fore and main masts, G.F. (I) and HORST WESSEL had them on all three masts.
Regards,
Werner
