Description:

I apologize for the quality, but I took this shot (as with some others I am posting) when I was a child with no photography knowledge and a cheap and indifferent camera.

Launched 16 January 1953 at Monkwearmouth (Sunderland) by John Crown & Sons Ltd. as hull no. 235 for A/S Lukesfjell (Olsen & Ugelstad), Oslo. 258’7” x 42’10” x 18’4.5;” 1604 gt, 778 nt; twin 5-cylinder Sulzer Diesels, 360mm x 600, geared to a single shaft, 1580-bhp, built by George Clark Ltd. Lengthened 1960: 297’2;” 1888 gt, 1001 nt. Later *Lenko* (1966). Destroyed by fire at Mocambique, 11 September 1968.

Shown May 1960 in the early morning fog near the mouth of the Chicago River, downtown Chicago, Illinois USA, at the old Wacker Warehouse beneath Wacker Drive on her first trip into the lakes after being lengthened for the joint Fjell-Oranje European Great Lakes Service.

Thanks not only for the picture that is interesting anyhow, but also for adding the details. I am a former Sunderland shipbuilder and I was trying to find out which ship the George Clark engine contract was fitted to. Contract 1495 was for Grindefjell, twin 5TG36 engines as was the sistership Rutenfjell, engine contract 1496. Both ships were built at the former John Crowns yard that had been taken over by and incorporated into J.L. Thompsons yard in 1949. Thanks again.

Don't apologize -- it works for me! To think that I was in my first year of high school when this was taken. Railroad buffs might want to note the large Santa Fe sign in the background. Nice post! Wacker Drive brings back some memories even though I was not from Chicago!
