Hi,

can you tell me what does MARU means? I saw on many ships that their second word is MARU.

Regards,
Christian

Hi, Christian
Thank you for good question. 8-)

Generally, "Maru" means circle.
There are some legends for the reason to name "Maru" in ships' end of names in Japan.
But the most approved legend is that ships have been treated as members of their families, as well as their children since old days in Japan.
Traditionally, they used to make a point of naming their children "Maru" at the ends of their children's name in noble families of old days in Japan, for instance "Christian Maru" because they hope their children closely tied into circles within their families.
Same meaning seems to be contained in ships.
