Description:

Balao Class Fleet Submarine built by the Electric Boat Company in Groton Connecticut and completed in 1944. Converted to Guppy 1A in 1951 and decommissioned in 1969. The boat is 307 feet long, 27 feet in beam and draws 17 feet. Displacement was 1870 tons (surfaced) and 2240 tons (submerged). Driven by 4 1600 hp General Motors diesel engines driving GE generators; twin propellers were driven by 2 GE 2700 hp motors and submerged by 252 battery cells. Spped 20 knots surfaced and 15 knots submerged. Carried 24 torpedoes which could be launched from ten torpedo tubes fore and aft. Crewed by 10 officers and 80 enlisted men.
