Description:

Picture taken 03.Sept 08 Beaumont Channel. Vessel is laid up there
in a whole pack with 5-6 others of her class.
Anyone can explain me why those ships have all the 'Mission' in
the name?

The ship is the Mission Buenaventura TAOT1012 (ex-Spirit of Liberty); Bldr: Bethlehem SY, Sparrows Point, Md. (In serv. 1968). She was named for a previous tanker with the same name (TAO111), who herself was the lead ship of a class of 27 fleet oilers built during World War II for service in the United States Navy, all of which were named for Spanish missions in California.

There is still 1 mission class tanker (for the moment) left at the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet, the Mission Santa Ynez. Due to the march of time, she doubles as the last of over 500 T-2 tankers also.

Also, thanks for the picture above, pictures of ships in this fleet are very hard to come by! Also, this ship is one of what was a fairly large number of the same or esentially the same design for a number of different companies.
