Description:

Passing Maassluis out bound on the New Waterway July 1978.
Built 1971 by Rheinstahl Nordsee, Emden. 16,963gt.
Miramar lists her as a container/roro. She could certainly carry both
but she was a multi-purpose general cargo vessel to my mind as her cargo handling layout and hatches would suggest.

Many thanks for the info, just compiling a Liverpool 50 year slide show and have a picture of Finnbuilder alongside Seaforth Container Terminal, we discharged containers and oil rig pipes from the Gulf of Mexico (i think) for use off-shore from aberdeen mid to late 1970's.

Derek,

Ass you can see,she have a ramp at her stern, that will be the reason that she is classified as a rorocargo ship as well, also she had a sister named:Finnsailor !
I think the ships belong to F-Ships,no details available.

regards,
Henk.

Hi Henk,
Yes the ramp was in evidence but I believed her to be a multi-purpose
ship. Lloyds infomation has her as general cargo. As she could carry
roro, containers and general cargo she is a job to classify.
A nice ship anyway and owned by O/Y Finnlines at the time his was taken.

Derek

Hi Derek,

Indeed she was a multi-purpose cargo liner. As you rightly say, she has conventional holds/hatches and handling gear. IIRC, the ro-ro ramp accessed a small garage area which could double as another conventional hold.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for your input, I was not sure how much space below deck was accessed
from the stern ramp.

best regards
Derek

Hi there,

Three sisters, Finnbuilder, Finnsailor and Finnamer. AKA Universal Superliners - lift on/lift off, roll on/roll off, truck to/truck off ( 3 + 3 sidedoors). Roro deck went all the way to # 2 hold, when Tween decks were lowered.

Speed 20 kts (16000hp Sultzer) max teu about 530. Stuelcken derricks 40t SWL for containerhandling when lifting together, seen 72t at the end of hooks, rest of the 18 derricks were 5/10t. Also vegitable oil tanks forward, both sides of # 1 hold - plus "strong boxes" under the aft mooring deck on the sides of the roro ramp entrance.

All six side doors were served by an elevator, capable of handlig a couple of paper reels, for example.

Why I know this - I worked onboard Finnbuilder and Finnsailor.

Beautiful liners indeed...

Best regards,
