This small Canadian coaster was terminating an Arctic voyage (season 1975) which was supposed to be also her very last voyage. The AIGLE D'OCÉAN was on ballast with two barges as in the Canadian Arctic there is no wharf and she was in transit from Koartak (Northen Québec) trough the Hudson Strait en route to Québec City. But very near the entrance of the Hudson Strait as she was trying to get a shelter due to bad weather, she develloped a heavy list because a water ingress. Sending a Mayday, the Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker NORMAN McLEOD ROGERS rushed to the scene and was able to rescue 5 of her 9 crew members. The icebreaker's helicopter crashed near the shore line during the rescue operation causing the death of both crew members. It happened August 20th 1975. I was 3rd mate on the ROGERS.
The Aigle d'Océan was the former OCEAN EAGLE, ex ST.ARVANS, a "Saint" serie steam tug built in 1919, transformed in the mid 50's as a diesel driven coaster.
