Description:

Stern view of Upeer Lakes straightdecker CANADIAN MINER off Verchères on August 12, 2005.
Automatic water sprinklers hose down the main deck to prevent hogging which is an expansion of the steel plates due to hot weather. The ship's beam allows only inches to spare in a canal lock so if the ship is too wide because of hogging, it can't enter the lock.
