The design of the sea training cutter marked with the symbol OS-1 (Bryza) was created in the Design Office of PROREM in Gdańsk. The construction of three cutters was entrusted to the Wisła Shipyard in Gdańsk. They were named ORP "Podchorąży", "Kadet" and "Elew", i.e. students of officer and non-commissioned officer schools. They were drafted into service in 1974-76, one per year. These were the first three training ships incorporated into the WSMW. The naval training cutter of the OS-1 project was intended to enable AMW students to perform command and navigation practice at sea.
ORP KADET entered service most likely at the beginning of 1975. Its shipboard number was 712. It was probably withdrawn from service at the beginning of 2005 or (possibly) a little earlier.
After being withdrawn from service, the ship moored in Świnoujście. Fortunately, it did not end up in the scrapyard. It was purchased by the Gdynia shipowner Jan Stępniewski & Co. Ltd ; The company, or rather its management, intended to convert the ship into a motor yacht. The ship moored for quite a long time in the port of Gdynia at the junction of the Rotterdam and Polish quays. From February to June 2005, I supervised J.Stępniewski & Co. on behalf of the shipowner. Ltd (as Chief Officer) renovation and reconstruction of the general cargo ship MAX (ex OTTER - shipowner Erwin Strahlman) in the port of Gdynia. At that time, the KADET visible in the photo was moored in the previously mentioned place. The photo certainly comes from the same period. The KADET ship was still moored in Gdynia in the early spring of 2007, when I boarded another ship of the same shipowner - m/v JOANNA. My path with the company has diverged and I don't know if the reconstruction project was completed successfully. I doubt it. Based on my observations, the condition of this small company is not great, but maybe I'm wrong.
