The area where this occred is a regular smugglin route for black market fuel, often illeagally "bunkered" in the Niger delta... the absence of crew considering the piracy and militancy in this area is actually not that surprising. i myself have been attacked several times in these waters

The "AFKO 307" medium size petrol tanker, that left Nigeria October 1, is currently ablaze off the coast of Debunscha in the West Coast District. The tanker left Nigeria October 1, 2009, for "an unknown destination". The ship was discovered on Oct 7 ablaze. No one was aboard. The manifest has not shown where the petrol tanker was heading to. Another document bears the following: "AFKO Engineering Service. P.O. Box 868, Tema, Ghana". While attempts are underway to extinguish the flames and as investigations continue, this incident raises some questions yet to be elucidated. Where was the petrol tanker heading to? Why no crew on board? What has happened to them? Debunscha, where the mishap occurred, is situated some 35 kilometres from the seaside resort town of Limbe.
