ENSURE THAT YOU ARE ABLE TO COMPLY WITH SITE STANDARDS.
See FAQ titled “Site Standards for Photos” then note “Standards that apply to all photos”
Then see if there is a FAQ for the Category of the vessel being uploaded, with requirements and information specific to that category.
Because of the importance of IMO numbers when searching the site, understand what they are. Go to the Wikipedia entry, and particularly the links under the References heading. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMO_ship_identification_number
PREPARE TO UPLOAD
Check that the photos to be uploaded meet Site Standards. If they do not, see if they can be adjusted to comply by using photo manipulation software such as Picasa (see FAQ on this site). Photo manipulation (sometimes called enhancement or editing) is a matter of routine for most photographers, including experienced photographers using expensive equipment. It is particularly useful for leveling a sloping horizon, or cropping, or compensating for poor light conditions, or when there has been camera shake.
Use the Equasis site for interesting and possibly useful information about vessels. Go to Equasis at http://www.equasis.org/EquasisWeb/public/HomePage?fs=HomePage
It includes data not included in the LRF information added during uploading. You will need to register. Some members use it as a means of correctly spelling the vessel name during uploading, by first pasting the Equasis information to the Description box, and then pasting the name from there to the Title box.
IF UPLOADING NEW PHOTOS.
After Login, see revealed links to My Photos and to Inbox for Private Messages.
To Upload photos, click My Photos, then at top of resulting detailed listing page Click Upload a new photo and complete the required information.
Note that all of the boxes require action.
If the vessel does not have an IMO, dot Not Relevant. This will be needed for categories such as Military vessels, Tour boats, Work boats, Shipping Company funnel markings, and some others. Not Relevant should only be dotted after research.
[Top]
Only the vessel name should be placed in the Title box. For this purpose that may include a registration number for a fishing or law enforcement vessel.
Some members paste the name from Equasis or similar data to ensure correct spelling.
The vessel name is usually the source for determining the vessel IMO number.
The IMO number must not be placed in the Title Box.
[Top]
This box can only be used for an IMO number, or seven zeros if there is no IMO number for the vessel. For some vessel categories, the "Not Relevant" box may be dotted. Military Ships, Sailing Vessels and Workboats are examples.
The IMO number is added during the uploading process, based on the vessel name entered directly or from Equasis (see Prepare to Upload above http://www.equasis.org/EquasisWeb/public/HomePage?fs=HomePage )or similar data sources.
See the information source links for IMO above under the sub heading "Ensure you are able to comply with sits standards", repeated here. Go to the Wikipedia entry, and particularly the links under the References heading. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMO_ship_identification_number
[Top]
The date and location where the photo was taken may be shown here, as well as from the mandatory information on the Upload page.
The IMO number can be shown here, as well as in the IMO box. Because of its precision, it may be useful for searching the site database. Searches using vessel names may attract photos of similarly named vessels. The IMO number can be obtained from Equasis data posted here (see Prepare To Upload above).
Search targets can be more precisely defined if information known to be in the Description field is included in the criteria as well as the vessel name. See the FAQ titled How can I navigate around the site under the heading Exploring the site
The Description box information is shown on the site under the photo when opened. It can be both useful and interesting to the enthusiasts who use Shipspotting.com
[Top]
When posting multiple photos of the same vessel taken at the same time, the submission must be restricted to a maximum of 6 photographs with the angle between each photo changing by a minimum of 30 degrees.
[Top]
Duplicate (identical) images are sometimes uploaded, possibly by error without member awareness.
These may be deleted without the usual deletions process being followed. See FAQ titled Deletions.

When uploading, members must comply with Copyright Law.
Post only Photographs or Videos for which you have copyright ownership. Other peoples slides or negatives can only be used if their name and permission is stated in the description. if you are in possession of a collection or own slides or photographs that have been purchased or acquired by other means but are not certain of the copyright owner you must NOT upload to the website, all photographs not taken or owned by the member must clearly state in the description the name of the person that owns the copyright and that you the member has approval to upload them to this website.
Any photographs uploaded that are not taken or owned by the member and are considered to be copyright infringement are accepted in good faith and the member will be contacted to verify that they have approval to do so, if this proof is not given the photograph will be removed from the website, unknown photographer or just a name is not acceptable as a description.
If a member is contacted concerning copyright infringement and confirms that they consider them to be free of copyright and they remain on the website then the member must accept his/her responsibility for any possible legal challenge for copyright violation, the website cannot be held responsible.
Scans of Ship Photographs from publications are not allowed.

It is an important site quality issue that photos are uploaded to the correct category - or sub category.
Correct action at this time saves volunteer Admin time, and assists searches by members and other visitors to the site.
Read the information under the Category Limitation heading in each Category Standard
[Top]
Choose the relevant guideline from the following:-
Two or more vessels of the same ship type. Upload to the Category or subcategory for that ship type. If the photo shows several vessels that are from different subcategories within a category, upload it to the main category - not a subcategory. Enter the IMO for the largest vessel in the image. Show all IMOs in the description.
Two or more vessels of different categories. Usually use the Shipping category. BUT when a vessel is dominant in the image compared with the size of others such as an attending tug or bunkering tanker, upload to the vessel category. If vessels from different categories are equally important to the image, upload to the Shipping category. In both cases enter the IMO for the largest vessel in the image.
Bulkers. Upload to the subcategory Bulkers Including More Than One Ship.
Fishing Vessels. Upload to the subcategory Overview - Fishing Fleets
General Cargo Ships. Upload to the subcategory General Cargo Ship Photos, More Than One Ship.
Military Vessels. Upload to subcategory Formation and Group Shots
Passengers Vessels. If the photo shows for example a cruise ship and a ferry, upload to the Passenger Vessels category. If the photo shows cruise ships built in different decades, upload them to the Cruise Ships category.
In the case of an area with many ships anchored, with no harbour facilities clearly seen, ensure that the photo is placed in the Shipping category, not in the Harbour overviews category. The photo must comply with the principle of Item 6 of Site Standards for all photos. Distant views and shots where the ships are a small part of the image may be considered for deletion, Details of the ships must be visible.
[Top]
If you don't know the name of the vessel, feel free to post the photograph to the site but please upload it into the MYSTERY SHIPS CATEGORY. Please add as much information as you can in order that the membership can try and add a name to the vessel.
See the FAQ for Mystery Ships for your responsibilities, and the action that will be attempted.

First wait for a few minutes. The site may temporarily be slow.
Then try again. Then check that the photo has not been added to the site more than once. If so, delete all but one image.

Photos are deleted for non compliance with site standards. Frequent reasons include those listed below.
* Image too dark for details of ship to be seen.
* Full vessel not shown, eg just a bow or stern section etc.
* Blurred or out of focus image.
* The ship is not the main subject focus in the image i.e. where scenery is dominant, or people are seen posing in front of the vessel
* Duplicate images taken at the same time have been uploaded, possibly without member awareness. These may be deleted without the usual process being followed - see below.
* Large watermarks cover the main subject image.

WHY DELETE?
Members can take pride in having their photo submissions published after meeting site standards defined in the FAQs. The following procedure enables all members, particularly new members, to identify the type of photo which is considered for deletion. The process is designed to encourage and help members improve their skills.
QUALITY CONTROL ACTION
Volunteer Admins inspect each photo submitted and check it against site standards. If they are met, the photo is accepted. The Admin then ensures that the photo destination is within the correct category.
If the photo does not meet site standards (see FAQ Site standards for photos), then the following options are available:-
ADMIN ADVICE
If the Admin has time available, the member may be contacted. The problem is outlined and the member can either delete, or manipulate the image and resubmit. Manipulation may include levelling the horizon, cropping, correcting darkness or blur, etc. If the member does not respond, then one of the following actions is taken.
SLOPING HORIZON
If the only problem is a sloping horizon, the Admin notes in the Description field “The horizon can be made level by the Straighten tool in Picasa (see site FAQ), or by other photo manipulation software”. The image is then transferred to the “Considered for deletion page.
PHOTO MANIPULATION POSSIBILITY
If the problem may be suitable for manipulation, the image may be transferred to the page titled “Photos for attention of manipulation advisor”. The Admin with that responsibility will then apply Picasa tools and send before and after manipulation images to the member’s email address as a demonstration of what can be done.
If possible the member is advised that the xPicasa image can be uploaded to the site. The original upload is deleted.
Members who have previously been advised of manipulation software are reminded of its existence.
CONSIDERED FOR DELETION
If manipulation action is not considered a remedy for a photo inconsistent with site standards – too dark, part ship only, blurred, cluttered foreground, ship not main item in image, ship too distant and resolution too low to crop, etc – then it is transferred to the “Considered for deletion” page. A brief reason is shown in the Description field.
DUPLICATES
If an image is a duplicate of another - perhaps a submission action of which the member is unaware - it may be immediately deleted by the Admin.
DELETION
Photos in the Consider for deletion category, and the comment of the category Admin, are reviewed (considered) by the Webmaster or his delegate.
If the comment of the category Admin is accepted, Images are deleted from the site. The member is advised of the deletion.
If the comment of the category Admin is not agreed, the issue is discussed with the category Admin and the photo possibly returned to its category
When a picture has been deleted from the site and the member notified with the reason given for deletion, it is not allowed to be re-posted to the site unless it has been manipulated to conform to the site rules. If a picture is again uploaded as it was, without any alteration, it will be deleted without further refferal to the member.
The webmaster has regularly told members that they can contact him directly if they are unhappy about a deletion.
MEMBER RESPONSIBILITY
Members are advised to watch their My Photos album for any changes of submitted category to “Considered for deletion” or “Photos for attention of manipulation advisor”. For information, they are also advised to review those pages also.

Not necessarily. Reviews are made by category Admins from time to time and may result in a transfer to the Consider for deletion category, with a reason stated in the Description.
The reason will refer to published site standards, as current at the time of the review, EXCEPT for
Item 1 re resolution. This has been upload screen controlled for some time. Photos previously on the site may remain if all other site standards, as varied below, are met.
Item 8 re sloping horizons. This will not be strictly applied for photos uploaded in 2008 and earlier years. It was 2009 before photo manipulation was generally accepted as normal practice,
Item 9 re date and location data. This will not be strictly applied for photos uploaded in 2008 and earlier years. Because of the level of Admin resources available at that time.
IMO information requirement. This will not be strictly applied for photos uploaded in 2008 and earlier years. Because of the level of Admin resources available at that time.
See http://www.shipspotting.com/modules/xoopsfaq/index.php?cat_id=12
and
http://www.shipspotting.com/modules/x ... q/index.php?cat_id=1#q134
Before any photo is deleted the Webmaster or his delegate must agree with a category Admin. Each decision regarding deletion of old photos will be subjective, but follow the Criteria and Exceptions guidelines below.
[Top]
Photos are not considered for deletion only because they are old.
Reviews are not made only for the purpose of identifying photos that do not meet current site standards. They occur when a category needs a subcategory classification variation, or when there has been an absence of Admin resource.
Site standards have varied, and will continue to vary. The variations are made after Admin group discussion and experience. For the volunteer Admin group of more than 20 people, it is not practical to keep a list of changes and apply them only to photos accepted after the date of introduction of the change. Some changes are minor, for example when the wording of a FAQ is improved for clarity, or to extend criteria for acceptance. If a significant change is made, members will be advised in the Forum.
The reasons for considering deletion of old photos may include one or more than one of the following:-
…..The photo may be of such poor quality that the vessel characteristics cannot be seen.
…..There may be other better photos on the site of the same ship in the same time period.
…..The photo may not have been reviewed when uploaded, because of the lack of Admin resource.
…..The photo may be in blatant breach of site standards
The uploading member will be advised of the reason for the deletion. It is expected that members will have kept the source image in their own files.
[Top]
There are occasions when current published site standards are not relevant, and will be waived by a judgment agreed between a category Admin and the Webmaster or his delegate. For example:-
…..Shots of historical value may be retained, even if the quality is poor or the resolution is low.
…..Photographs of ships doing unusual tasks in unusual places may be retained.
…..A poor image may be retained when there is no other photo of the vessel on the site,
…..Research and interest values of the site may determine that a photo should remain.
The reason for waiving site standards will be added to the Description for the photo.
COLLECTIONS OF OLD PHOTOGRAPHS
These will be retained, and more can be submitted.
Where the exact date of the photo and the location are unknown, show (or edit add) as much information as can be recalled. Approximate details are acceptable
