Henning, the good thing is that the Chinese, Korean and Japanese people can all read the same newspapers, if written in Chinese characters / hanja / kanji, even if pronounced completely differently, because they are all based on the same (Chinese) symbols. Not so good about it is that you need to know a lot of symbols to understand them. :)

But Korean hangul characters are actually letters, and there are only 24 of them, so it's not a problem to read them. They may look more difficult, because they are "packed" in "groups", but still so much easier that Chinese symbols.

There is a significant difference between chinese / korean and japanese Characters

Just like you said, jadran, the name is very literal:

금 (keum, but also geum, or something in between) means (among other things) gold, while 어 (eo) means fish. The same is also written in Chinese characters in the middle.
