Description:

Shown in long term lay-up at Eie,Pa Sept,1982.The HOMER was built in 1960 by Great Lakes Engineering Works,River Rouge,Mi,730'x75'x39'She was lenghtened 96' in 1976.She last opperated in 1980,and layed-up in Erie.Sold for scrap,amd towed to Port Colborne,Ont in 1987.Since she was not converted to a self-unloader when lengthened (806'),she became expendable after the steel mill at Lackawana,N Y closed in 1980. This mill was the only mill that had shore side unloading equipment. The steamer JOHNSTOWN (5174698) was built in 1952 by Bethleham-Sparrows Point Shipyard,Sparrows Point,Md (626'x70'x37')
Lengthened 72' in 1958.She last ran in 1981, then layed up at Erie. She was sold for scrap in 1885, and towed to Spain

The Arthur B. Homer is the near identical sister ship to the ill fated Edmund Fitzgerald which sank on November 10, 1975 with all twenty nine sailors on Lake Superior about 17 miles west of White Fish Bay.
