As I recall, the regulation now is that doors can only be open when within 1 ship length of the berth.
Due to the design of some linkspans/vessel ramps, some ships must open their doors or bow visors before they are in final position due to clearance issues.

After the `STRAITSMAN` turned turtle in the Yarra not far from her berth..new regulations were introduced ie..no open stern or bow doors opened before tie-up..Cannot remember exact date..but joined the STRAITSMAN after the incident and subsequent RO/ROs and always kept em shut..

@PDS, I still see recent photo's posted on this site with open stern doors upon and after sailing....sad...

That open stern door would be a NO NO now.

Thats a long time, 46 years...I remeber her running in and out of Melbourne to Tasmania, she spent years on that run.
