18/2/1964 - became disabled after her engines had broken down in heavy seas on a voyage with grain from Philadelphia to London and Hull. Although taken in tow by the Dutch tug "ELBE", she sank three days later, after her hatches were broached.
The official inquiry found the master was in the unenviable position of having to decide to abandon ship, knowing that only 20 of the 35 crew could be taken off on the two life rafts.
One raft drifted off and was not seen again; the other overturned with the loss of six of its occupants. All the 21 survivors were rescued from the ship itself by a USCG cutter and a Norwegian ship.
The inquiry threw up the question (relevant in 1964, I suppose) of whether it is safer to chance your survival by remaining with your craft or taking to a life-raft or boat.
