Description:

This is a cropped detail of a photo I took of the laid up railroad car carrier SEATRAIN NEW YORK in Jan. of 1971, at Savanah Shipbuilding & Drydock. I was a cadet raining ship Bay State, which was there for her annual yard repair and dry-docking.

This is an article about Setrain's rail carriers from a 1946 Popular Mechanics magazine from 1946, after her return from the USN.
http://books.google.com/books?id=0N4DAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA122&dq=Popular+Science+1930+plane+%22Popular+Mechanics%22&hl=en&ei=W_WGTsHtEYTi0QHX37jcDw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=5&ved=0CD0Q6AEwBDgo#v=onepage&q&f=true

Listed under RO/RO as this seemed to be the closet category to railroad car carrier.

Correct. This ship was so old that no category here fitted it.

Railcars were *lifted* on and off Seatrain's railcar carriers, not rolled on and off, so RO/RO is not really appropriate. Then again, neither is any other category as they were were unique to Seatrain.
