This is one of three live-bait catchers converted from surplus Navy "garbage lighters." These were hopper vessels that pulled alongside Navy ships in port, had all the ship's trash and garbage dumped into them, then took it to sea where the hoppers were opened and the material was all dumped. Obviously, as plastics became a significant part of our cast-offs, this could no longer be done, and the Navy disposed of its fleet of YG's. The RIVAL was the second of three vessels of this type bought by the Everingham Brothers Bait Company (EBBCo), and until 1972 was designated YG 29 for the Navy. She was documented as RIVAL (ON 550412) in 1974.
