For more on this fire, see below:

I was on a sister-ship of this vessel, the Sea-Land Independence. Although all hands are trained in firefighting, in reality it would be extremely difficult for the crew of a vessel such as this to contain a fire of this nature on their own, both because it is difficult to access, and because the ship only has a total complement of 21 crew members.

@Boris, thanks for this very interesting shot.
@Mark, thanks for the link.
@ Jadran, my friend, again thanks for the 'insider' info regarding the repairs!

Shaun, as I remembered in arnd 80 TEUs cargo was damaged and disposed. Minority of containers were moved by rail/road to consignees and
the rest were moved to Rijeka's container terminal loaded on board of another vessel ( don't remember name) for further deliveries.

How much was lost in terms of TEUs?

Additional information:
Sea-Land Mariner suffered sever containers' explosion (on the roads by the Greek island Crete) in two cargo holds aft of the accommodations.
The extinguishing of the fire, that was caused by the explosion, lasted a couple of days and finally the vessel was towed to port of Piraeus for Vessel Inspection.
The Vessel Inspection was carried-out by a number of eminent European shipyards amongst them also shipyard Viktor Lenac from Rijeka, Croatia.
The bid of VLS for the restoration of Sea-Land Mariner was the most successful & VLS was awarded the contract.
The ship was then towed from port of Piraeus to Rijeka and to VLS for repairs.
At VLS,, the complete aft two holds with hatch covers were restored, including topsides partial steel renewal of hull, also the steering gear room & 'miles' of electric cabling towards Engine Room. This restoration project at the time 1998 was worth 3,3 mil USD.

It was explosion on aft part due to positioning of wrong manifested containers into the hold instead on the deck. There were two containers loaded with expandable polystiren and I think that blast took 2 seamen's lifes. Accident has happened near port of Piraeus.
