I sailed on a couple of LASH ships exactly like this one, LASH Pacifico and Austral Rainbow. They were remarkable vessels, built like battleships. Their creators really thought that these ships were going to revolutionize the shipping industry. The idea was that these ships would not really need to tie up to a dock at all, merely drop off and pick up their barges while at anchor. Thus, they would not require large, deep-draft docks or elaborate shore-side facilities, as container ships did. Unfortunately, However, it didn't work out that way. In the end the container ship concept won out. Nations all over the world constructed huge container terminals in their seaports, and these remarkable ships were relegated to obscurity.
