Remarks: First two units approved under the FY 95 budget, MSC 683 under FY 96, MSC 684 under FY 97, MSC 685 under FY 98, MSC 686 and 687 under FY 99, MSC 688 under FY 00, and MSC 689 and 690 under FY 01. A total of 12 is planned. These are the first Japanese mine countermeasures units with fully computerized combat systems. MSC 681, 682, and 683 are assigned to the 3rd Minesweeper Division, Yokosuka; MSC 684 is assigned to the Escort Fleet, 2nd Minesweeping Division, Sasebo.

Hull systems: Wooden construction. Forecastle is extended aft to provide shelter for remotely operated minehunting submersibles. Have twin funnels athwartships.

Combat systems: Use an NEC-built variant of the GEC-Marconi Nautis-IIM tactical data system, with three operator consoles, a chart table, and a plotter. The sonar is a license-built Thomson-Marconi Type 2093M, and the hoist gear is within the forward part of the superstructure. Carry two French PAP 105 Mk 5 remote-controlled minehunting submersibles. Sweep equipment includes an Australian Dyad magnetic and acoustic array and Oropesa Type 6 wire sweep gear. Have WRN-7 GPS receiver and Decca Hyperfix precision radio navigation aids.
