I was on a small reefer named H.F.Sahlman, she ran mainly Tampa-Montserrat-St.Vin-Grenada-F-Guiana and Guyana and back to Tampa via Jamaica. Every 4 weeks, 10 years I did that run.

Hi Ted, Absolutely correct we called Barbados, Grenada, St Vincent, St Lucia & Dominica. Which reefers were you in in those days? In the 8os I was in the Hamburg Sud Polars & 3 years in a Cool Carriers Spring.

I sailed in GEESTHAVEN as 2nd mate, mate & master & took her to Singapore where she was converted to a sheep carrier. Out of the 4 sisters GEESTBAY was my favourite.

I grew up with the Geest boats running into Barry, best looking ships on the Bristol Channel by far, and always well kept. I sailed on the Geeststar, single voyage while training, and recall peeling the paint off a section of bulwark - I counted 43 coats...

You're right Gerolf. She's probably one of the finest reefer during her time (as a reefer ship). I served on board her as an electrician when she was acquired by MCP (Maritime Company of the Philippines) and renamed M/V ISLA VERDE. That was during the mid-seventies. Thanks for posting this, Gerolf.
