Description:
AVIS ORNIS (built by Readhead, South Shields in 1956 as NEW YORK CITY) is seen passing Battery Point, Portishead, outbound from Avonmouth on 28th March 1968, having just been sold by the Bristol City Line to the Leopard Shipping Company of Gibraltar. The blue star on her funnel had been painted white, making a clear contrast to the dirty white paint surrounding it.
She was sold in 1970 to Thenamaris, who renamed her FELICITY, and appears to have been purchased by the People's Republic of China for further trading in 1972. The ship remained in Lloyd's Confidential Index, still under the name FELICITY, until at least 1981, and in Lloyd's Register until at least 1991, her LR classification having (not unusually) been withdrawn in 1973, casting into doubt Miramar’s assertion that she was scrapped in China during 1971/2.
Last night we had the joy of having our granddaughter, coincidentally named Felicity, staying with us overnight. Exactly fifty years ago, at dusk, I was memorably at Battery Point taking this photograph with a low shutter speed, I think one thirtieth of a second.
