Description:

Royal Mail Lines' 1949 Cammell Laird, Birkenhead, built DERWENT is seen passing Hoek van Holland outbound from Rotterdam on 11th June 1970 during a voyage from Buenos Aires. She was nominally owned by Prince Line and subsequently reverted to Shaw, Savill & Albion service.

DERWENT finally arrived at Bilbao on 25.11.71 for breaking.

I was 4th Engineer on her last trip to Bilbao. My first as a steam turbine watch keeper. Nightmae as I had no idea what was going on as I was a "Motor man" thru & thru!

Many thanks for uploading this photo. I sailed on the RMS Derwent as a junior engineer in October 1969. It was my first ship, and a great experience for a 20 year old. Met some great guys and had a good time in South America! Did a a couple of trips and then joined the Andes, but that's another tale!
