The LPC 1816 "Grumete Santiago Salinas" was built by the Israeli Navy during the 70's, under the license of the United States. She arrived in the country, along with another 6 "Dabur" units, under the "Tiburón II" project, on January 15, 1991.

Once in Chile, they were called LPC (Coastal Patrol Boat), forming the Grumete Group, depending on the IV Naval Zone, with a base port in Iquique. At the beginning of 1997, the LPC "Salinas" changed her dependence on the Ex Naval District of Chiloé (DISNACHIL), having as a base port the city of Castro, directly depending on the Maritime Governance of that city.

In 2007 he returned to the port of Antofagasta in the IV Naval Zone, becoming dependent on his respective Maritime Governance. During the year 2011 the unit carried out a remotorization in Asmar (V) where different systems, equipment and machinery were changed and modernized.

Since 2013, the LPC "Salinas" has become dependent on the Maritime Governorship of Iquique, having that city as its base port.

The LPC "Grumete Salinas", owes its name to the bravecabin boy who fought on board the Corvette "Esmeralda" and died on May 21, 1879, during the second approach to the monitor "Huascar", under the command of Lieutenant Ignacio Serrano, in the Naval Combat of Iquique.
