The picture of ”Helga Dan” is Anita Dan or Frida Dan.
The company J.Lauritzen published a booklet “J.Lauritzen lines” in 1963 or 1964.
The booklet describes the fleet of polar ships with a drawing and a describtion of the dimensions and technical equipmet of each serie of ships.
In 1984 was published a book “J.Lauritzen 1884- 1984” by Søren Thorsø. This book describes all the ships and their fate during the companys first 100 years.
I have a copy of both.
The Picture is neither Helga Dan nor Thora Dan: Those two sisterships were build by Stülcken in Hamburg in 1956 and 1957. They had 5 hatches and the mast on the foredeck was a single mast.
The picture of “Helga Dan” illustrates a ship with a bipod mast on the foredeck.
The number and configuration of windows in the superstructure indicates it is one of f the following ships:
Anita Dan: Krögerwerft, Rendsburg (No 1080) 1956. Sold to Royal Navy in 1967, rebuild and renamed HMS Endurance A 171. Decommissioned 1991 .
Frida Dan: Werft Nobisburg, Rendsburg (No. 593) 1957. Dimi L 1974, Giannis K 1979, demolission 1981.
Erika Dan: Werft Nobiskrug, Rendsburg (No. 604) 1958. Al Riaz 1973 sank north of Vigo Spain in 1974.
Anita Dan and Frida dan had one 25 tons derrick at hatch no 2. Erika Dan had a 35 tons derrick at hatch no 2 and a 25 tons derrick at hatch no 3. So the picture can not be Erika Dan.
Both Anita Dan and Frida Dan were delivered with white mast, and a red funnel with black top.
.
My father was the first chief officer on Anita Dan and my life was founded on the ship.
Helga Dan and Thora Dan are the first ships I can remember.
I will sugest you update the photo and rename it Anita dan ( or Frida Dan)
If you are interested in the drawing, technical descriptions or the history of the ships, please let me know.
Best regards and thank you for publishing the photo.
