Description:

Upper deck of the roll-on/roll-off vessel LIEKUT. The upper deck is located directly above the main deck and is home to the ship’s sheltered forecastle. Thirty-four lights are used to keep this small area appropriately illuminated.

This deck is somewhat exposed to elements of the weather via spaced vertical obround openings in the sidewalls. Partial shelter is offered via the top deck located directly above.

The two vents pictured supply the bow thruster room located below the main deck.

The upper deck has a clearance height of 4.70 metres and is suitable for refrigerated (reefer) containers. It has the capacity for 70 trailers and a deck area of 1186 lane metres.

SeaRoad Shipping has chartered the modern roll-on/roll-off vessel LIEKUT (pronounced 'lee-koot') for three years to replace the 30-year Bass Strait veteran SEAROAD TAMAR (now broken up) on the regular service between Devonport and Melbourne.

LIEKUT Open Day

On the 14th of June 2021, from 10am to 4pm, the freight decks of SeaRoad Shipping’s new charter vessel LIEKUT were open for public access. About six thousand people in total had arrived at the SeaRoad terminal in East Devonport to explore the new state of the art ship. There was an average of about 900 visitors an hour coming and going from the terminal.

Admission to the open day was via gold coin donation to the local Rotary Club - whose volunteers helped by directing visitor traffic as well as managing COVID-safe practices on the site. A food and beverage van was set up at the SeaRoad terminal for the occasion.

When approaching the new SeaRoad vessel, visitors were presented with the ship’s large open stern, which gave access to all four cargo decks. These decks were completely void, thus presenting visitors with an impressive visual perception of the overall size and cargo carrying capabilities of the new ship.

Access to the bridge deck was also available to visitors. This offered an impressive view of the ship’s top cargo deck as well as a chance to see Devonport’s surroundings at a height of approx. 28 metres (9 storeys) above the Mersey River.

Open day was initially planned for the 4th of April, but had to be rescheduled due to advice from the Victorian health authorities regarding COVID-19 concerns.
