Ah, but my '45 was a better vintage than ARO's '44 with happy memories from Southampton of enjoyable Malta cruise calls.

Emmanuel, I am of 1949 vintage and I have just under 7 months to go before my birthday. I am British and live in Norwich, Norfolk (which for our non-British members, is on the eastern side of the country).

Well Bjorn at 83 you are automatically elected Grand Master of the Club 70s Order.,that is if our friend Matt confirms his age at 121, he will assume the seat whilst you will be his vice.from your email address ,you must be Norwegian, our first Scandinavian.
Keep safe and take care.
best regards from Malta.

Not a bad idea Jim, painting Giraffes on Jibs, at least we polish our abseiling skills, we could also paint zebras on dockyard vehicles.
keep safe, keep smiling Jim.

That is not a bad idea Barry, though with this cursed Covid19, and with this new variant the Omicron, the possible meeting of the Shipspotters 70s Club in Malta is remote.
Just take care my friends, just take the vaccine and play it safe, at our age we are most vulnerable.
regards from Malta.

So we keep on dreaming

Hi Victor, realizing just now that you are 73 only means that you are not feeling your age, that is a good sign my friend.
So are going to be the Spanish member for the over 70s Club ? Membership is free, just present yourself with a smile on your face and ready to crack and take a joke. We may have wrinkles on our faces, but not in our hearts.
regards and keep safe my friend.

Joking aside I reckon that a get together in Malta with a few like-minded people who we only know as names on Shipspotting would be something really special. Probably best to wait until covid is further behind us but not to leave it too long. I've reached the age when the best time to do anything is always "now." Let's hold that thought.

Hi Matt, have just discovered looking up the info provided by you, first that you are Welsh , your gender is male and your age is 121 years,...so you are more than eligible for the 70 to 90 Club. This something of a record as the most old shipspotter/photographer in the whole world. I wonder why you have not posted some photos of Viking ships or galleons the Spanish Armada....he..he. and I thought I was old.
regards and keep safe my friend

on a sad face.

Hope that my wife and son does not see this photo ,seeing the edge of the bastion, Jim. I forgot to clip off the bastion edge before posting it.
The bastion is sloping down ,at parts crumbling and sometimes slippery with the vegetation growing upon it.
Maybe in my old age I must be more wary and not taking these chances for a photo........??!!??

Hi Andrecas re your sidebar on defunct docks, this is a common situation in Europe, the competition from eastern shipyards is massive and I don't see much of a recovery, though the cruise liner market is still evident in European yards.....up to now, these eastern yards have still not geared up for this lucrative market, though the future could be different.
regards.
Emmanuel.L.(Malta)

Edit
comment

person
@ MattB....It is my understanding it can take up to 8 hrs in some yards. (presumably an overnight process-depending on the yard, their work schedule & size of vessel).

@ Emmanuel.L : I enjoy your photos out of Malta. Nice work...!

Sidebar: The local shipyard in Saint John, now defunct-having ceased operations more than 20 years ago, built/repaired a variety of vessels, including frigates, tankers, cargo ships, tugs, etc.). The yard was closed due in part to the competition from overseas yards that were (and still are to this day) heavily subsidized.
The drydock itself, 1150ft/350m in length, is still there - (just filled with water).
A wallboard plant and other Irving interests now occupy the main building(s) on site.

Well Matt, it is according to the vessel in the dock, a vessel of this size, the dock will be emptied in less time than if the vessel is a smaller one like a tugboat,or a supply vessel.
